Vol. 114 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Revenue from Tourist Traffic.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is in a position to state the total revenue obtained from tourist traffic during the years 1947 and 1948, respectively.

The net receipts from tourism, travel, etc., in the year 1947 (i.e. the excess of expenditure of external visitors in Ireland over that of Irish tourists abroad) have been roughly estimated at £28,000,000. An estimate for the year 1948 is not yet available.

Would the Minister now consider the imposition of an import tax on tourists, as was suggested by several of the Parties forming the Government during the recent general election?

The Deputy, as an ex-Minister for Finance, might know that question would be more appropriately addressed to his successor.

It was addressed to the people as a proposition.
