Vol. 114 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shortage of Rayon Material.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that certain factories engaged in the making up of women's blouses and underclothing from rayon material may have to close down in the near future due to the inability of the manufacturers to supply them with the material necessary for the making up of these goods; and, if so, whether he will state what action he proposes to take in the matter.

I assume the Deputy's question arises out of the recent imposition of a duty on certain woven rayon piece goods. Representations have been made to me that, because of the inability of the Irish manufacturers of these types of woven rayon piece goods to supply the demands of the country, facilities should be granted for the importation of piece goods without the payment of duty. I have arranged that this proposal will be examined in consultation with representatives of the various interests concerned, and when that examination has been completed I will consider the matter without further delay.
