Vol. 114 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Council Houses for Gardaí.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider introducing proposals for legislation enabling local authorities to grant tenancy of council houses near Garda barracks to married Gardaí who are in need of proper houses.

Mr. Murphy

In the lettings of local authority houses preference is given to persons displaced from slum areas by the operations of the local authority, to families living in one-room dwellings where one or more members of the family are suffering from tuberculosis and to persons living in overcrowded or condemned houses. Members of the Gardaí who come within these special classes are eligible with other occupational classes. Until these categories are properly rehoused, I do not think that I would be warranted in proposing any departure from the special preferences accorded to them by law.
