Vol. 114 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Howth Housing.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state how soon it is proposed to erect houses in Howth for the working people; and if he will indicate the reason for the long delay in this urgent matter.

Mr. Murphy

I understand that development work on a scheme of 68 houses at Howth will be commenced by the Dublin Corporation during the coming week. I am not aware that there has been any undue delay in dealing with this scheme.

Is the Minister in a position to state how many houses will be built on this scheme and in how far the proposed number of houses is expected to remedy the shortage in housing?

Mr. Murphy

As I explained, the development work is for a scheme of 68 houses and I presume the 68 houses will be constructed in accordance with that proposal. The latest survey of the housing needs in Howth reveals that 13 families in the area were living in unfit or overcrowded dwellings, although there is only one tenement building. If the Deputy has any information contrary to the figures I have given, I would be glad to get that information and to have the matter inquired into further.
