Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Housing Applications.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the Dublin Corporation have upwards of 25,000 applications for housing accommodation on their waiting list, that this list consists of thousands with large families living in single rooms in overcrowded conditions, that it also includes 5,000 applications from newly-married couples, and that in 1944 the city manager was of the opinion that these applications should be considered; and, if so, whether he will now state if any agreement has been arrived at between his Department and the corporation regarding the 5,000 applications and if he will state the proposals which have been agreed to.

Mr. Murphy

I am aware that the Dublin Corporation has a considerable waiting list of applications for housing accommodation, and that this list includes 1,850 applications from newly-married couples. As I have already stated in answer to a question on this subject on the 17th instant, regulations for the preparation of schemes of special houses or flats for the accommodation of newly-married couples have been drafted and circulated to the Dublin Corporation and certain other housing authorities and to the Dublin Housing Consultative Council for comments and suggestions. The regulations will enable the local authorities concerned to allocate dwellings for this class. Meanwhile the housing authorities have been recommended to include houses or flats suitable for newly-weds in housing schemes now being planned.
