Vol. 114 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Expenditure.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the reduction of road expenditure by each county assuming the rate contribution remained as for 1948-49 and having regard to the reduction in Road Fund grants; and, also, if he will state the additional rate required to be struck assuming county councils were prepared to finance the deficiency from their own resources.

The reduction of expenditure on the basis set out in the question is given in a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be circulated in the Official Report.

It would not be possible to furnish particulars of the hypothetical rates requested by the Deputy, because (a) any increase in expenditure on main roads would rank for recoupment at 40 per cent.; (b) expenditure on main roads is charged to the county-atlarge, on county roads to the county health district; (c) 13 counties will receive a higher county road grant in 1949-50 than in 1948-49.
