Vol. 114 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Reclamation and Drainage.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he can state (1) when the proposed scheme for land reclamation and drainage will come into operation; (2) if it will be applicable to all farms needing improvement, and (3) in the event of applications exceeding the grants available in the first year, how priority will be arranged.

I hope to be able to make an announcement in a few days' time giving details of the scheme. Meanwhile I can assure the Deputy that it will apply to all farms capable of being improved by drainage and reclamation. As it will take some months to secure the additional staff required to apply the scheme to the whole of the country, I propose to have it operated at first in as many counties as can be covered by the staff who can be obtained at short notice. As more staff becomes available, the scheme will be extended until it embraces the entire country, but, subject to the limitations likely to arise as a consequence of difficulty in securing the necessary manpower, it is intended to make a start in eight counties, namely, Carlow, Sligo, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Monaghan.

I am glad to note that the Minister, in his reply, has mentioned my constituency. However, I think it would be more equitable to initiate the scheme in every county.

So do I, and I know the Deputy shares my regret that miracles cannot be performed. I trust the Deputy will give me credit for an ordinary miracle.

Monaghan included.
