Vol. 114 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pension Appeals.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare (i) how many old age pension appeals he has received from the following committee areas, viz.: Ardagh, County Longford, Ballymahon, Ballinalee, Longford, Drumlish, Granard, and Ballymore, Moate, in County Westmeath; (ii) how long ago these appeals were received: and (iii) if he will see that decisions are expedited.

It would not be practicable without a disproportionate expenditure of time and labour to say how many appeals have been received from the areas mentioned in the question. Of the appeals from those areas, with the exception of Drumlish, for which there is no separate committee area, all have been decided except 41, distributed as follows:—

Co. Longford

Co. Westmeath

Ardagh

8

Ballymore

2

Ballymahon

7

Moate

4

Ballinalee

9

Longford

3

Granard

8

Thirty of these appeals have been received since the beginning of this year, the balance of 11 having been received during 1948. In the latter cases difficulty has been experienced in obtaining all the facts necessary for the proper determination of the appeals. Special steps are being taken to expedite clearance of these cases and I expect they will be cleared in the next month or so.
