Vol. 114 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Violets.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what the position is with regard to the export of violets and whether he has been able to negotiate any agreement with the British Board of Trade that will ensure the revival of this old industry in Glandore and Castlehaven.

There is no restriction on the exportation of violets from this country but their importation into Britain has been prohibited since 1942. I have made strong representations to the British authorities to grant import licences for these and other Irish-grown flowers. The British authorities maintain, however, that as they do not wish to import flowers from hard-currency countries, they must refuse imports from this country also, by virtue of their international non-discrimination obligations. I can assure the Deputy that I shall continue to do everything possible to secure a favourable decision.
