Vol. 114 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free Legal Aid.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has now considered the representations made to him for free legal aid for persons unable to pay for legal assistance, and if he hopes to be able to introduce proposals for legislation providing for free legal aid for such persons during the present year.

This matter is still under examination, and I am not at present in a position to make any statement in regard to it.

Is the Minister in a position to indicate when consideration is likely to be completed?

I am not able to say exactly, but as soon as possible.

Would the Minister consider inviting the assistance of Deputies who are familiar with this problem?

Subsidies for lawyers.

Mr. Boland

Is that the idea, that lawyers have to be subsidised?

They do not require subsidies.

A Deputy

That is an ignorant interruption.

It is typical.

I have received a deputation from the Labour Party and other people concerned and public representatives, and the matter is under active consideration.

You have a fair chance of succeeding.
