Vol. 114 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bog Drainage in County Kerry.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the drains made in the Lisheen and Coom bogs, Gneeveguilla, Rathmore, have not been sunk to a sufficient depth to drain off the bogs and that whereas the people using the bogs were informed that turf could be cut to a depth of about 14 feet it can only be cut to a depth of three feet when the bank is flooded; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take to rectify the apparent mistake made in the drainage scheme.

The drains on the Lisheen and Coom bogs to which the Deputy refers were not sunk to their full depth owing to the waterlogged condition of the ground. These bogs have now become fairly dry and it is intended to deepen the drains further in the near future. When the work is completed the people using the bogs will be assured of an ample turbary supply.
