Vol. 114 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Street Shelters for Gardaí.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will take up with the Dublin Corporation the matter of the provision of suitable street shelters for traffic control Gardaí engaged in the control of traffic in Dublin City, with a view to protecting them from rain, storm and cold, thereby avoiding the danger to health arising from exposure to the elements in the performance of their duties.

The answer is in the negative. I do not think it would be possible to provide shelters which would afford effective protection and at the same time allow sufficient freedom of movement for the pointsmen. Apart from this most of the junctions where pointsmen operate are too narrow or otherwise unsuitable for the erection of shelters.

I might mention that pointsmen are being replaced as far as possible by traffic lights.
