Vol. 114 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Malahide Gas Supply.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the Press reports which indicate the possibility of the residents of Malahide, County Dublin, being deprived of gas for domestic purposes, and whether he will investigate the position with a view to taking any steps within his power to prevent the people concerned having to go without this essential service.

I have seen the Press reports indicating that the Malahide Gas Company proposes to cease operations. There are no statutory provisions in relation to this undertaking, and the owners are at liberty to discontinue production at any time. I have no functions in the matter.

I should like to ask the Minister if a position should arise whereby the residents of Malahide will be deprived of this essential service, would the Minister consider the possibility of having this service taken over by the Government and made available to the people?

That is a separate question and it does not arise. The Minister has no function in the matter.
