Vol. 114 No. 12

Proposed Question on the Adjournment.

I beg to give notice that, with your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, I propose to raise on the Adjournment the subject matter of Question No. 3 on the Order Paper of the 24th February last.

The Deputy already spoke to me about that matter and I have looked up the question and also the second question which he asked in reference to it. The Taoiseach's reply to the second question made the Government's attitude quite clear and I do not think that any further development of the point could be envisaged except to advocate legislation or to indulge in criticism of the personal affairs of the Taoiseach, neither of which would be permissible. Therefore, I am not accepting the question on the Adjournment.

I do not propose to criticise the personal appellations of the Taoiseach. What I proposed to do was to criticise the people who were patented as S.C. or senior counsel and who call themselves king's counsel. I think it is a very bad example for the country——

The Deputy may not, in the guise of a point of order or of a submission to the Ceann Comhairle, make a statement now which he is not allowed to make on the Adjournment.

Then can I raise the last question I asked the Taoiseach on the Adjournment——

The question which the Deputy proposed to raise was the subject matter of Question No. 3 on the date mentioned. I do not see that it is a matter that can be raised on the Adjournment.

I submit it is a question of importance to the public that members of the Senior Bar should not misrepresent themselves——

The Deputy may not pursue the matter now.

Would it be in order to point out that the Deputy had himself 16 years within which to remedy this appalling injustice but did not avail himself of his powers during that time?

The Taoiseach is still to call himself king's counsel even though he is patented as senior counsel.

A Deputy

You will never be patented as one anyhow.

He has been living a lie all these years.
