Vol. 114 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unsold Honey Stocks.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that large stocks of honey still remain unsold, due to the large quantities imported; and, if so, whether he is prepared to obtain a market for the surplus honey now on the hands of members of the beekeepers' association.

I am not aware that large stocks of honey remain unsold. The quantity imported during the 12 months ended February, 1949, was 52 tons, as against 220 tons in the 12 months ended February, 1948.

As a result of representations made to the British authorities, they are now prepared to allow section honey to be imported and distributed free of price control and rationing.

Is the Minister aware that this imported honey is very inferior to Irish-produced honey and that it is being sold to consumers in many cases as Irish-produced honey?

I am not so aware about the selling under a false description.
