Vol. 114 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Insurable Employment.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if, he will state the number of persons employed weekly in occupations insurable under the Unemployment Insurance Acts of 1948 as calculated from the net unemployment insurance income and comparable figures for 1947 and 1948 allowing for the changed scope of the Unemployment Insurance Acts since October, 1948.

The average numbers of persons employed weekly in occupations insurable under the Unemployment Insurance Acts, as derived from the net contribution income of the Unemployment Fund in the years 1947 and 1948 have been provisionally estimated as follows:—1947, 304,200; 1948, 319,700.

From the 4th October, 1948, nonmanual workers whose remuneration exceeded in annual value a rate of £250 but not a rate of £500 became insurable under the Unemployment Insurance Acts for the first time. The estimated number of contributions paid by persons affected by this extension of the scope of the Acts has been excluded from the foregoing calculation for 1948 for the purpose of the comparison with 1947.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the average number of persons employed, derived from the sale of unemployment insurance stamps, for the years 1939, 1946, 1947, 1948, making allowance for the increased number of entrants in 1947 due to the raising of the wage limitation.

The estimated average weekly numbers of persons employed derived from the net unemployment insurance contribution income in the years referred to are as follows:—

1939

255,700

1946

285,200

1947

304,200

1948

319,700

The estimate for 1948 is provisional, but it makes the allowance suggested by the Deputy.
