Vol. 114 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Chairman of Aer Lingus.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the terms of appointment, including remuneration, of the chairman of AerLingus.

The appointment and remuneration of the chairman of AerLingus are governed by the articles of association of the company and by the terms of two agreements, dated 9th May, 1946, and 28th March, 1947, entered into between Aer Rianta and the two British shareholding companies. The inter-company agreements provide that Aer Rianta shall nominate a majority of the directors and that the majority shall include the chairman. The person so nominated by Aer Rianta is elected to the office of chairman by the directors in accordance with the terms of the articles of association. The remuneration of the chairman, in common with that of the other directors, is determined by the company in general meeting from time to time.

Would the Minister give the House an assurance that the chairman of this company will not be in a position to draw £37,000 for a period of four years, as in the case of the ex-chairman of Córas Iompair Éireann?

Do you believe the Minister for Finance's falsehoods? Surely you are wiser than that?

The only difference is that it is £34,000 instead of £37,000.

He did not say one thing about that that was wholly true.
