Vol. 114 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electricity Generating Stations.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (i) the generating capacity of the coal fired station originally proposed to be erected by the Electricity Supply Board at Cork; (ii) the capacity of the coal fired station now proposed to be erected at Dublin; and (iii) whether the initial proposal to construct a coal fired station was made by the Electricity Supply Board to his Department or emanated as a directive from his Department.

The generating capacity of the coal or oil fired station originally proposed to be erected at Cork was to be of the order of 30 megawatts. With regard to the station to be erected in Dublin in place of the proposed Cork station, the Electricity Supply Board has proposed that provision should be made for two 30 megawatt generating units. The board has represented to me that, in view of the rapid increase in demand and the fact that by the time this station is in operation the generating units at the Pigeon House will be reaching the end of their useful life, the provision of a second 30 megawatt unit would be necessary; and I am at present considering these representations. The initial proposal to construct a coal or oil fired station was made by the Electricity Supply Board.
