Vol. 114 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Derry Port and Cattle Exports.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the present system by which. cattle from the West of Ireland are being exported through Derry is a cause of grave dissatisfaction; and, if so, whether he has given consideration to the provision of boats for the transport of cattle through Sligo or whether he proposes taking other steps to remedy the situation.

I am aware that the Port of Sligo is not being utilised to the fullest extent. The Minister for Industry and Commerce has no power to provide new shipping services and does not exercise any control as to the ports at which ships load or discharge their cargoes. The question of providing shipping services at any particular port is a matter for arrangement between the commercial interests concerned and the shipping companies.

It was indicated to my Department on various occasions by local interests that cattle shipments would be resumed if a cattle lairage was provided and if dredging was carried out. State grants have been made available for each of these purposes. The lairage was completed some time ago and dredging is in progress.
