Vol. 114 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agricultural Tractors and Milk Deliveries.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the present regulation which prevents owners of agricultural tractors from taking their neighbours' milk to the local creameries is causing milk producers to waste a considerable amount of time that could otherwise be spent in productive work on the farms; and, if so, whether he will take the necessary steps to enable one tractor and trailer to transport several farmers' milk to the separating station.

Under the provisions of the Road Transport Act, 1933, it is not lawful for any person who is not the holder of a merchandise licence to carry goods for reward in a mechanically-propelled vehicle or in a vehicle drawn by a mechanically-propelled vehicle. The conditions under which new licences may be granted are severely restricted by legislation and the present licensing system could not appropriately be used to give effect to the Deputy's proposal.
