Vol. 114 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Land.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he will state if the Land Commission have under consideration the question of the acquisition of the lands now occupied by Mr. Martyn at Mossforth, Tuam, originally owned by Mr. John Waldron.

The Land Commission do not propose to take any action at present regarding the lands owned by Mr. Patrick Martyn at Masmore and Carrowbaun.

asked the Minister for Lands whether it is the intention of the Land Commission to acquire the lands held until recently by Mr. Brannick at Kilelooney, near Milltown. County Galway, for the relief of congestion in that area, and on which strong representations were made recently.

I am arranging to have the Deputy's representations in this case considered.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the amount of land acquired in the midland and eastern counties for the provision of migrants' holdings, allotments, etc., since the removal of the close down Order.

The best I can do for the Deputy is to tell him that since restrictions were removed the Land Commission have inspected over 5,000 acres in the five counties which, I think, he has in mind, and have started acquisition proceedings for over 3,000 acres. Later in the year we shall see the results in the taking of actual possession.

In addition to the areas mentioned, there is a very considerable acreage in these counties in the earlier stages of inquiry.

asked the Minister for Lands, if he will state (a) the number of farms or estates in respect of the period since February, 1948, in County Westmeath (i) inspected with a view to acquisition and subsequent distribution among uneconomic holders; (ii) in respect of which proceedings have been instituted with a view to acquisition and (iii) divided; and (b) the total acreage involved under (i), (ii) and (iii) respectively.

The Land Commission in the period since February, 1948, have inspected 17 estates or holdings comprising a total area of 3,422 acres in County Westmeath, have instituted proceedings for the acquisition of three estates or holdings containing 350 acres and have divided two estates comprising 138 acres.
