Vol. 114 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Land in Land Commission's Hands.

Mr. Walsh

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the amount of land in County Mayo that is in the hands of the Land Commission for the purpose of distribution among uneconomic landowners; how much of this land was acquired due to the migration of tenants to other areas and how much of it is arable land acquired for the purpose of relief of congestion.

The area on hands in County Mayo is approximately 13,500 acres of which approximately 2,600 acres represent lands vacated by migrants to other districts either inside or outside the county. It is not possible to state accurately how much of this area is arable. A considerable portion has been on hands for a long time being land of an inferior quality and difficult to dispose of.
