Vol. 114 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clothing Manufacturers and Home Market.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the clothing manufacturers in Eire are now in a position to supply the home market with all their requirements at competitive and fair prices; and, if so, whether he will make the necessary arrangements to safeguard the employees in this industry from undue dumping of mass produced shoddy garments from other countries.

I have recently made an examination of the position of the clothing industry in relation to the imports of apparel from abroad, and I have had discussions with the clothing manufacturers on the subject. On the information presented to me I am not convinced that the Irish manufacturers should not be able to maintain and expand their position in the home market with the advantage of the protection at present afforded to the industry, that is an effective rate of 25 per cent. ad valorem.

I have informed the manufacturers that I am not satisfied on the evidence they have submitted that they have established a case for increased protection. but that I am prepared to reconsider the matter in the light of any further evidence they may be in a position to submit.

Mr. Byrne

Can the Minister state whether he is prepared to reconsider the matter at a very early date in view of the threat of unemployment?

I have stated that I am prepared to reconsider the matter in the light of any further evidence that may be submitted to me.
