Vol. 114 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Health Insurance Fund.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the increased revenue derived from increased contributions to the National Health Insurance Fund (a) in the past financial year; and (b) anticipated in the current financial year.

The Social Welfare Act, 1948, made provision whereby the statutory rate of sickness and disablement benefit was increased from 15/- and 7/6 per week to 22/6 and 15/- per week, respectively, and contributions were increased to meet the higher rates of benefit. The revenue derived from increased contributions to the National Health Insurance Fund in the past financial year is not known, as the returns of stamps sold at post offices in recent months are not yet available. The amount of such increased revenue up to 31st December, 1948, was £66,337.

The estimated amount of such increased revenue in the current financial year is £475,000, made up of £266,000 from employers and £209,000 from insured persons.
