Vol. 114 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Examination Fees.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state (i) what increases have taken place in examination fees and other charges upon pupils and teachers of a like nature, and (ii) the approximate increase of revenue received during the past financial year and anticipated for the current financial year.

In the case of secondary schools the only increases in examination fees are those which have been made in the case of the entrance fees for the certificate examinations, the fee per candidate having been increased from 2/6 to 4/- for the Intermediate Certificate and from 2/6 to 5/for the Leaving Certificate. The approximate additional revenue resulting from these increases was £1,250 in the financial year 1948-49, and it is anticipated that the corresponding figure for 1949-50 will be £1,300.

As regards the technical school examinations for evening students, increases have taken place in examination fees with effect from the commencement of the 1948/49 school session as follows:—

The former fee of 1/6 has been increased to 2/6; the 2/3 fee to 5/- and the 3/- fee to 7/6. In the case of the entrance examinations to courses for training of vocational and technical teachers the former fees of 5/- have been increased to 10/- and the former fees of 10/- have been increased to £1. Fees for other examinations in connection with teaching qualifications have been raised in two cases from 10/- to £1 to bring them into line with the fees for examinations of a similar standard conducted by the Department.

There was an increase of approximately £1,300 in fees received for technical school examinations for the financial year 1948-49. It is anticipated that in the current financial year there will be an additional increase in revenue of approximately £200, due to special additional examinations occurring in that year.

No increase has been made in fees in connection with the primary branch.
