Vol. 115 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cow-Testing Supervisors' Remuneration.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that cow-testing supervisors are very dissatisfied with their present remuneration and conditions of employment; that their case has been under consideration in his Department for a number of years, and whether he will say when he hopes to be in a position to announce improved terms of employment for this important group of employees.

The answer to the first part of the question is "yes". The question of providing improved conditions of employment for supervisors of cow-testing associations is one to which I have given careful consideration, and I am hopeful that, with the collaboration of the co-operative movement, it may be possible to put into effect a reorganised system of milk recording which would permit of reasonable salaries being paid to supervisors. I am not at present in a position to say when the new system can be brought into operation.

Is the Minister aware that several supervisors of cow-testing associations who had been pioneers in the movement have resigned their positions because of inadequate salaries, and will the Minister recommend that this matter be expedited?

I am aware that there have been resignations, but I am not aware as to the cause exactly. There have been resignations of officers in various fields of life and it would be unreasonable to attribute them all to financial discontent.

I can assure the Minister that the resignations in this case were due to the inadequacy of the salaries.

It appears to me that the Minister's answer admits the case the Deputy is making.
