Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing of State and semi-State Organisations.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will state (i) the number of houses or premises formerly used by private persons or companies which are now being used by State or semi-State organisations in Dublin; (ii) in relation to each Department and each State and semi-State organisation the street name and street number of each such house occupied by it and the number of officials accommodated in each house.

Excluding Garda Síochána stations, post offices, stores and workshops there are at present 78 such houses and premises occupied by officials for whom the State provides accommodation.

A statement giving particulars of the houses, etc., concerned and the number of officials in occupation will, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, be circulated with the Official Report.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that it would be a good idea to sell some of these houses? If we could speed up the building of proper accommodation to house a number of civil servants who are at present occupying these houses, would that not be a good thing in view of the fact that the Parliamentary Secretary recently paid £15,000 for a new house which would only accommodate a few people?

What would it cost to take over the whole of the square?

Houses for the people must come first.
