Vol. 115 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increase in Butter Ration.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the 40 per cent increase in butter production in January and February, 1949, over that of the same two months in 1948 as indicated recently by the Minister for External Affairs, he will make arrangements for an increase in the butter ration.

The Deputy is, no doubt, aware that production of creamery butter is at its lowest in the months referred to and while production in these two months this year was substantially greater than in the corresponding period of 1948, the increase was not such as would justify the present ration of 6 ozs. to be increased at present. The matter is, however, kept under constant review.

Would it not be more honest to admit that the increase was due entirely to the mild winter?

The only people in this House who deny God's goodness are the Fianna Fáil Party.

You are taking all the credit for it.

Deputy Lemass ought not to be so irritable.

The Minister for External Affairs made a statement that there had been a 40 per cent. increase but the Minister for Industry and Commerce now states that he is not going to increase the ration of butter by 40 per cent.

The Deputy looks as if he were delighted.

No I am not delighted. I am very anxious about the poor.

The Deputy looks as if he were very pleased.
