Vol. 115 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pensions Applications.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will indicate the names and addresses and dates of application for pensions of persons within the Cork Borough constituency whose applications were received before 1st March, 1949, and still under investigation, in each of the following categories: (i) old age pensions, (ii) blind pensions, (iii) widows' and orphans' (contributory) pensions, (iv) widows' and orphans' (non-contributory) pensions, and (v) special allowances (I.R.A. and Cumann na mBan) where the means are investigated by his Department.

It is contrary to practice, and, I think, undesirable, to publish the names and addresses of persons claiming old age pensions and widows' and orphans' pensions without their consent.

As regards heads (i) to (iv) of the question the numbers of claims received before 1st March, 1949, and still under investigation at the end of that month, were approximately as follows:—

(i) and (ii)

49

(iii)

14

(iv)

42

Separate records are not available for heads (i) and (ii).

As regards head (v), applications for special allowances under the Army Pensions Acts are dealt with by the Department of Defence. Investigation of the applicants' means is done by my Department only at the request of the Department of Defence. Any question in this regard should therefore be addressed to the Minister for Defence.
