Vol. 115 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Junior Assistant Mistresses.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that national teachers find it impossible to procure the services of junior assistant mistresses in backward areas; and that the principal reason for this state of affairs is the low remuneration of junior assistant mistresses and the increased cost of board and lodging in these areas; and, if so, whether he will take immediate remedial action.

I am aware that, owing to the shortage of qualified persons, managers of schools have, in a number of cases, found difficulty in obtaining the services of qualified junior assistant mistresses for vacancies in schools under their management. The situation in this respect is under constant review in the Department and it is expected that the position will improve when the results of this year's competition for junior assistant mistresses, based on oral and practical tests already held in Easter week and on the Leaving Certificate examination to be held in June, come to hand. Meanwhile, the Department is willing to consider favourably proposals from managers for the temporary appointment, until such time as qualified persons become available, of girls who have passed the Leaving Certificate examination within the last few years. I do not know if it is generally understood that trained teachers are eligible for recognition as junior assistant mistresses and that they receive the full-trained teacher's salary therefor up to the sixth increment.
