Vol. 115 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Safety and Civics.

asked the Minister for Education whether he will consider taking steps to ensure that all children attending schools under his control shall receive adequate elementary instruction regarding road safety and civics.

Attention is already paid in national schools to the instruction of the pupils in road safety and circulars have been issued by the Department from time to time emphasising the necessity of training the pupils to realise the dangers arising, inter alia, from road traffic. I have, however, at present under consideration the question of whether suitable steps cannot be taken to make more adequate provision for such training. I have recently discussed the matter with representatives of the Safety First Association in Dublin.

Moral training, which is the foundation of civics, is adequately provided for in the schools and is regarded as fundamental to the whole course of instruction there.
