Vol. 115 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cancer Hospitals.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware that there is a grave shortage of hospital accommodation for cancer patients; and, if so, whether he will have a special central cancer hospital built with up-to-date cancer clinics throughout the country.

I am aware that the existing accommodation for cancer patients is inadequate. I understand, however, that expert medical opinion inclines to the view that the main deficiency in our cancer services lies in the inadequacy of our diagnostic and treatment facilities rather than in a shortage of beds. A special council was set up by me last year to examine the cancer problem. I have been informed that the council is considering in the light of expert advice and experience gained elsewhere the best means of dealing on a national basis with every aspect of the cancer problem in this country and I expect that the question of the provision of a special cancer centre will be dealt with in the report of the council, as well as such questions as the provision of expert personnel and up-to-date equipment to operate whatever type of service may be recommended. The report of the council, which is expected in a few weeks when received, will be considered by me with the minimum of delay.

As regards clinics, I think that in view of the specialised nature of cancer treatment, it would not be practicable to have anything more than diagnostic work undertaken in them. In this matter also future policy must depend on the type of organisation which may ultimately be set up to deal with the whole problem.

I am sure the Minister is aware that for two years past, the number of people who have died from cancer is as high as the number who have died from tuberculosis and that for other years almost as many have died in cancer as from tuberculosis. I am sure the Minister realises the urgency of extending the present hospital accommodation for cancer patients.

As I have told the Deputy a council is studying this whole problem. I expect a report from it shortly and I shall act upon it with the greatest possible expedition.
