Vol. 115 No. 5

Committee on Finance. - Vote 28—Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.

I move:—

That a sum not exceeding £36,870 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending the 31st day of March, 1950, for Grants to the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (No. 13 of 1940).

Mr. de Valera

There is, I understand, a very disturbing element in connection with the Institute at present, that is a sort of fear and uncertainty. We have specialists there of world renown. It would be a disaster if any feeling of insecurity should get abroad and we should lose the services of some of these. It is very important, therefore, that at the earliest possible moment any anxiety in that regard should be dispelled. It would be a great disaster, in my opinion, if we were to lose some of these through any feeling of insecurity. My own feeling is that there ought to be no feeling of insecurity.

I do not know of any reason why anybody should feel insecure except there are people engaged on some particular class of work which is coming to an end and there is nothing else for them to do.

Mr. de Valera

It is the existing schools.

I know of no reason why there should be any feeling of insecurity in regard to them. I will make inquiry and see what type of feeling of that particular kind there may be and, if I can allay it in any way, I will be glad to do so.

Mr. de Valera

I can give the information myself to the Minister.

Vote put and agreed to.
Progress reported; Committee to sit again.
