Vol. 115 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Local Government Department Inspectors.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of the post of architectural or engineering inspector in the Department of Local Government, for which candidates were interviewed on the 4th March, 1948, by the Civil Service Commission: (i) if an appointment was made from the original list of candidates interviewed; (ii) if not, whether an appointment was made other than from that list; and, if so, the name, address and qualifications of the candidate so appointed, or (iii) if no appointment has been made when it will be made.

Three appointments have been made from the list of candidates referred to in the first part of the Deputy's question, and no appointment has been made otherwise than from that list.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of three posts as engineering inspector in the Department of Local Government for which candidates were interviewed by the Civil Service Commission on the 11th February, 1949: (i) if all or any of the posts have been filled from the original list of candidates interviewed; (ii) if any of the posts have been filled other than from that list; (iii) if he will state the names, addresses and qualifications of candidates so appointed, and (iv) if some of the posts still remain to be filled, when the remaining appointments will be made.

The interviews referred to by the Deputy actually took place on the 10th, 11th and 12th February, 1949. One of the posts has already been filled from the list of candidates then interviewed, and a second post is in process of being filled from that list. None of the posts has been filled otherwise than from that list. The candidate so far appointed is Mr. D.J. Doyle, M.E., an engineer on the staff of the Dublin Corporation. A second candidate has been offered appointment, but, as he has not yet intimated his acceptance of the offer, I do not consider it desirable to disclose his identity. The Civil Service Commissioners were unable to recommend any qualified and suitable candidate for appointment to the third post, which, therefore, remains unfilled. At the moment, I cannot say when an appointment to that post will be made.

Can the Taoiseach state if the remaining post will be regularly advertised and interviews held in the ordinary way?

I am informed that that is under consideration.
