Vol. 115 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Car Lighting Regulations.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state: (i) how many prosecutions have been instituted against motorists who infringed the regulation made by the Minister for Local Government providing for a device to dim the front lamps of vehicles so that they cannot cause dazzle at a greater distance than 25 feet, since the date of the introduction of the regulation; (ii) if he is satisfied that the regulation is being complied with; and, if not, what further steps he proposes to take in order to ensure satisfactory compliance with the regulation.

Forty-seven prosecutions have been instituted. I have no reason to think that the steps being taken by the Garda to enforce the Order are not effective.

Will the Minister agree that there is still a persistent breach of these regulations by motorists?

Indeed, I will. It would be hard to have a Guard on every part of the road.
