Vol. 115 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Housing.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state whether land has been acquired by Dublin Corporation for the building of working-class houses at Finglas; and, if so, whether he will indicate (a) the acreage of land acquired; (b) the total number of houses to be erected on this site; (c) whether consideration will be given to the claims of local residents in respect of the allocation of these houses, and (d) the approximate date on which building operations are expected to begin.

The Dublin Corporation have acquired land at Finglas for the erection of houses for members of the working classes.

(a) The area acquired is 101 acres, and steps are being taken to acquire further sites totalling 380 acres.

(b) The land already acquired will accommodate about 850 houses. The total number of houses to be erected on the entire area will be approximately 4,000.

(c) Since these lands are situated outside the county borough boundary, the corporation are not in a position, under existing regulations, to accept applications for the tenancy of the houses from persons not resident within the county borough boundaries, but an extension of the boundary to include the whole of this housing site is proposed.

(d) The corporation hope to be in a position to commence building operations in the area early in 1950, by which time it is hoped all the acquisition negotiations will have been completed.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state what steps are being taken to meet the urgent need for working-class houses in the areas of Lucan, Clondalkin and Tallaght, County Dublin.

The position with regard to the provision of working-class houses in these areas is as follows:—

Lucan Area.—Work on a scheme of 48 houses is in progress and it is hoped to have some of these houses completed by the end of this year.

Clondalkin Area.— A tender has been accepted for the erection of 14 houses at Clondalkin, and work on this scheme is about to commence.

Tallaght Area.—A scheme of 12 houses now in progress is expected to be completed by September next, when it is hoped to commence work on a further 24 houses which are held up pending the provision of a sewerage connection.

A survey of housing requirements in the entire county has recently been completed by the county council and sites to meet these needs, in so far as they are not catered for by schemes now in progress, have been selected for acquisition. The balance of the housing needs of the areas mentioned will be provided for under the comprehensive programme for the county, the formulation of which has been almost completed.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the estimated total working-class housing needs in Dublin County based upon the survey recently undertaken by the Dublin County Council.

The survey recently carried out by the Dublin County Council has revealed that the total working-class housing needs for the county amount to approximately 2,500 houses.
