Vol. 115 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Creamery Stops.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that the farmers of Derrynane and the surrounding areas have to convey their milk supply a distance of five miles; and, if so, whether he will investigate the matter with a view to sanctioning a creamery stop at Farraneragh, Caherdaniel, at the earliest possible date.

The answer to the first part of the question is "Yes". I have arranged with the Dairy Disposal Company, that for the present year at least there should be three travelling creamery stops in the Castlecove-Caheidaniel area instead of one as at present. The question of selecting the most suitable sites for the two new stops is at present being examined.

Is the Minister aware that the chairman of the Dairy Disposal Company sanctioned the removal of one stop at Glenbeg against the wishes of the suppliers, and that he is making no effort to grant a stop at Farraneragh, where the suppliers want a stop and which has seven years of a prior claim to other districts?

My information is that there is no intention of doing away with the stop at Glenbeg; that it is proposed, while maintaining the stop at Glenbeg, to provide two additional stops in consultation with the local suppliers. Did I understand the Deputy to say that his information was that there was a plan to abolish the stop at Glenbeg?

There is no such plan. The Glenbeg stop will be preserved and two additional stops will be provided.

May I hope that the Farraneragh area will be one of these?

I would be glad if the Deputy would give me the benefit of his advice in determining where the other two stops should be.

I have indicated Farraneragh.

I will be glad to talk them over with the Deputy.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that additional creamery stops are required in the area served by the Cahirciveen creamery group; and, if so, whether he will arrange a general survey of the milk supply of the different districts with a view to the allocation of an additional portable creamery there.

If it is established to my satisfaction that milk suppliers in the area mentioned are seriously inconvenienced by an insufficiency of creamery stops, I would be prepared to consider favourably a proposal to have an additional travelling creamery put into commission. Whether the expenditure involved would be justified, however, depends on the quantity of milk likely to be available. I propose to have the various districts surveyed with a view to ascertaining the potential milk supply, and any other relevant information.
