Vol. 115 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gaeltacht Glasshouse Scheme.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the reason for the delay in paying the final instalment for the 1948 crop to the persons who have glass-houses under the Gaeltacht (Tomatoes) Glasshouse Scheme.

The final instalments mentioned by the Deputy have all been paid except in two cases in Connemara where difficulties regarding title to payment have arisen owing to death and legal incapacitation, respectively. Substantial payments on account were made to growers during the season, but complicated accounting operations were involved in the calculation of the final payments in all cases.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the average net income to each allottee under the Connemara glasshouse scheme from the sale of last season's tomato crop; the amount of the balance not yet paid to him; and when this balance will be paid.

The average net amount payable to growers in the Connemara area under the Gaeltacht glasshouse scheme in respect of tomatoes produced in the 1948 season was £85 10s. 10d. The final payments have been made except in two cases where difficulties regarding title to payment have arisen owing to death and legal incapacitation, respectively. In some cases, however, the growers' annual contributions to capital costs have been postponed to later years so as not to reduce their net receipts to an unduly low level.
