Vol. 115 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Pay Increases.

asked the Minister for Justice whether, in view of the fact that members of the Garda Síochána consider his offer of 11/- a week increase in their pay inadequate, he will (i) reconsider the matter with a view to increasing the offer, and (ii) arrange for the payment of marriage and children's allowances to married members of the Garda and of a special city allowance to all members of the force stationed in Dublin City.

The award of pay increases for the Garda Síochána has been improved by making it retrospective to 1st November, 1948.

I cannot hold out any hope of the grant of marriage allowances, children's allowances or special city allowances to the Garda Síochána. I should like to point out, however, that all members of the force who are not provided with official quarters are granted rent allowances and these allowances are higher in Dublin, Cork and Limerick than elsewhere.

May I ask the Minister if he considers that an increase of 11/- a week to a married Guard with four or five children is an adequate increase in view of the present cost of living?

The Minister must think so if he made such an offer.

Will the Minister say what is the amount of the rent allowance in Dublin City?

I could give the Deputy a table in relation to that matter if he puts down a question.
