Vol. 115 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lettermullen Bus Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the former bus service between Galway and Lettermullen has been operated for some time only as far as Annaghvane owing to the bad condition of three bridges on the route; that heavily laden lorries are allowed over those bridges; and if he will request Córas Iompair Éireann to permit the driving of unladen buses over the bridges so that the service to Lettermullen may be restored.

Having regard to the dangerous condition of certain bridges in the Lettermullen area, the Galway County Council, in exercise of their powers under Section 158 of the Road Traffic Act, 1933, imposed weight and speed restrictions in 1941 on vehicles using the bridges on this route. Even a small bus would be considerably in excess of the permitted weight. I understand that the county council have the work in hands and I am assured by Córas Iompair Éireann that it is their intention to restore the service to Lettermullen as soon as the bridges are again open to heavy traffic.
