Vol. 115 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Embankments (County Kerry).

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the completion of the scheme for the repair of the embankment on the Marshall estate, Calinafercy, County Kerry, is one of urgency; and, if so, when work will be resumed on this estate.

The repair of the River Maine embankments at Calinafercy was undertaken by the Land Commission subject to the condition that the occupiers of the benefiting lands should contribute towards the cost. This condition has not been complied with and the work has, therefore, been discontinued.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware of the urgency of carrying out the necessary repairs to the sea embankments at Cromane, Gurrane, Douglas and Killorglin; and, if so, whether he will sanction the necessary grant for the carrying through of a repair scheme at an early date.

In the course of the recent debate on a motion in the Deputy's name I made it clear that the Land Commission have no liability for the repair or maintenance of the embankments at Cromane and Gurrane and I mentioned the difficulty about incurring any expenditure on the repair of these embankments, having regard to the fact that the works are noted for inclusion by the Office of Public Works in a scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act.

The position at Douglas is somewhat different. In that case there is a fund in existence administered by local trustees who have applied to the Land Commission to have the embankments there inspected and arrangements have been made for an examination of these works.
