Vol. 115 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Creamery Stops.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of the necessity for additional creamery stops at (i) Emlaghmore and Mastergeehy, and (ii) Cromane and Glencutane areas, County Kerry; and, if so, whether he will take steps to facilitate the farmers concerned at the earliest possible date.

The question of providing special creamery facilities in the four areas referred to by the Deputy has been examined by the Dairy Disposals Company. I am satisfied, as a result of this survey, that these districts are already reasonably well served by existing creameries, either stationary or portable. The Deputy will appreciate that it is not possible, with the number of travelling creameries at present available, to provide stopping places in every district, and, in consequence, some suppliers must of necessity be less favourably situated than others. I propose to ask the Dairy Disposals Company to re-examine the whole position in the Cahirciveen peninsula next winter in the light of the milk supplies received this season, with a view to providing additional facilities, if circumstances appear to justify such a course.

Mr. Flynn

If, as a result of the survey, additional stops are required, due mainly to increased milk production in these areas within the past year and probably next year as well, will the Minister favourably consider the question of establishing new creamery stops in the Emlaghmore and Mastergeehy area and the Cromane and Glencutane areas as well?

I do not doubt that if that happy event transpires the Deputy and I and the Dairy Disposals Board and all others concerned will conspire to provide as many stops as may be necessary.
