Vol. 116 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Afforestation Lands at Ballinahinch.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that part of the lands of Ballinahinch, Connemara, which have been advertised for sale are eminently suited for afforestation; and, if so, whether he will consider the acquisition of the areas suitable for this purpose.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the lands advertised for sale by the Irish Tourist Board. I am aware that a considerable portion of the land is suitable for afforestation and that other lands in Ballinahinch and the neighbourhood are capable of being made suitable for timber growth. It is my intention to establish a forest centre in the area and the lands have been inspected and examined by my Department with that objective.
