Vol. 116 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Exchanges.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he now proposes to install a telephone exchange in every post office in the country, enabling persons requiring telephones to apply and obtain telephones in their houses throughout the country.

Additional exchanges will be installed in post office only in so far as this may be necessary to provide service for all persons requiring telephones in the surrounding areas. The provision of an exchange in every post office is, however, neither necessary nor desirable. In fact, it would be extremely wasteful of engineering plant, staff and accommodation, apart from having an adverse effect on the service generally. In many cases post offices are too near existing exchanges to provide suitable centres as telephone exchanges.
