Vol. 116 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dancing Tax.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of each year in which a dancing tax was operative (a) the revenue derived, and (b) the cost of collection.

As the answer to the first part of this question is in the form of a tabular statement I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated in the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

RECEIPTS OF ENTERTAINMENT DUTY FROM DANCES.

Detailed figures are not available for any period prior to 30th September, 1937. As from 1st October, 1937, the approximate net receipts in respect of dances were:—

£

6 months to 31st March, 1938

29,732

1938/39

52,965

1939/40

55,934

1940/41

56,068

1941/42

68,644

1942/43

88,639

1943/44

114,194

1944/45

132,745

1945/46

148,875

1946/47 (to 31st July, 1946)

76,099

With regard to the second part of the question, it is not possible to state definitely the cost of collection of entertainments duty on dances as the cost of the Revenue Commissioners' Office is not apportioned amongst the various duties collected.
