Vol. 116 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prefabricated Houses.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the present position regarding the erection of prefabricated houses to relieve the housing shortage in Dublin.

As already announced, the Dublin Corporation decided recently, following consideration of some 55 tenders received for the supply of non-traditional houses, to accept the tender submitted by a British firm for the supply of 500 aluminium prefabricated bungalows as a contribution to the city's immediate housing need. This decision was made known to all trade unions concerned in the building industry in Dublin, and their views on the proposal were sought, in accordance with the undertaking given by the corporation when inviting tenders for non-traditional houses. I am awaiting a final report from the corporation on the outcome of their consultation with the trade unions.

I understand from the corporation that a proposal for the erection of an experimental group of 58 houses of pre-cast concrete slab construction is about to be submitted for my approval.
