Vol. 116 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Corporation Houses.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that there are many tenants of corporation houses in Cork City anxious to purchase their houses on a tenant-purchase basis; and, if so, whether he is prepared to examine the position with a view to introducing proposals for legislation to enable them to do so.

No representations on this subject have been made to me by the tenants or by the Cork Corporation. It has been ascertained from the Cork City manager that no applications for purchase have been received within recent months from corporation tenants, and the city council have not so far discussed the desirability of initiating a scheme. New legislation would not be required to authorise a tenant-purchase scheme.

Might I ask if the Minister has any record of a deputation of the tenants' representatives to his predecessor, the late Mr. Murphy, at which that particular matter was discussed? I might inform the Minister further that I myself was a member of that deputation.

I have no knowledge of that deputation. Tenant purchase is covered by Section 11 of the Housing Act, 1919, and all that has to be done is to initiate a scheme. The city council, as I told the Deputy, have not so far discussed the desirability of initiating such a scheme.
