Vol. 116 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the Land Commission has issued vesting orders to the tenants of the Barley estate, Aughalasheen, Belmullet, and that the tenants on this estate are objecting to the vesting of their holdings until the Land Commission carry out the necessary improvements, such as making fences between the tillage land and commonage, etc.; and, if so, whether he will make representations to the Land Commission that those necessary improvements be carried out.

The objections mentioned by the Deputy in his question are listed for hearing by the Land Commission Court where they will receive proper consideration. It would be most improper to make a statement at this stage.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when the Land Commission intends to give a grant for the re-arrangement of the Joynt estate, at Tallagh, Belmullet, and also housing grants to the tenants on the estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when the Land Commission intend to stripe and fence the estate of Ormsbys, at Tallagh, Belmullet, and to give grants for the housing of the tenants on this estate.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I will take together Questions Nos. 9 and 10.

It is a function of the Land Commission to carry out improvements such as fencing, housing, etc., but when lands are to be re-arranged it would be impracticable for the Land Commission to deal with such works until such time as the re-arrangement has been carried out. As regards the townland of Tallagh, this is but one of the many congested districts which the Land Commission are anxious to re-arrange and which has been noted for re-arrangement as soon as circumstances permit.
