Vol. 117 No. 6

Supplementary Estimate—Vote 16 (Superannuation and Retired Allowances).

I move that leave be given by the Dáil to introduce the following Supplementary Estimate for the service of the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1950, namely:—Vote No. 16 (Superannuation and Retired Allowances).

The Estimate will be in token form. What I propose to do is to make an explanation when the Vote is being taken, of the various increases in pensions which we intend to grant over a very wide range. These are the pensions the full payments of which will be regularised by the Pensions (Increase) Bill. This is a precedent which the Deputies opposite will remember was established when the Superannuation Bill was moved in 1947. I hope to be able to give fairly full details of the people who are to be dealt with and the graduated amounts that are to be paid but we have found it impossible to get all these things put into Parliamentary language of the type which will be required for legislation. I am asking leave to introduce the token Vote to be circulated this evening and I should like to have it on the Order Paper to-morrow.

Leave granted.

I take it that if we object to it being discussed to-morrow the Minister will not press that.

The Deputy will possibly allow me at least to mention it to-morrow, if I feel able to go on with it. Then if an adjournment is desired that will be all right.
