Vol. 117 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Liability for British Military Service.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether he has considered the supplementary question put to him on 9th June, 1949, and if he can now say if there is any difference in their liability for compulsory military service in Britain between Irish citizens temporarily employed in that country and the citizens of the United States of America similarly employed in Great Britain.

Irish citizens temporarily employed in Britain are in precisely the same position with regard to liability for compulsory military service as are citizens of the United States similarly employed in Britain. It is only after they have been ordinarily resident in Britain for more than two years that Irish citizens become liable for compulsory military service.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have taken any steps to acquire the McCarthy-O'Leary estate at Millstreet, County Cork.

Inquiries are being made by the Land Commission, but no decision has been reached in this case.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when the Land Commission will divide the lands, near Buttevant, County Cork, known as the Crofts estate, Buttevant.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I will take together Questions Nos. 7 and 8.

As the acquisition and resumption proceedings in these cases have not been completed, I cannot state whether or when the Land Commission will divide the lands.
